MEN’S TENNIS BEATS CHARLOTTE 6-1 IN SPRING HOME-OPENER

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team defeated Charlotte 6-1 in its spring home-opener on Sunday at Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

"I think we played well today, and it was get back and play on our home courts after playing in the Florida State Invitational two weeks ago," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu.  "We practice hard for two weeks, and overall it was a good performance by the team today.  Charlotte had a good win at Samford on Friday.  Our goal was to start really hitting hard, take the lead and keep the momentum.  We certainly did that in doubles.  We started with many breaks in the beginning and were able to take the lead.  In singles we played aggressive as well.  Once we got ahead we just maintained a rhythm and it paid off for us pretty well."

The Jaguars won two of the three double matches for the point heading into singles play.  Clement Marzol and Pierre Noyon fell 6-2 to Garcia and Oriol Puig Forne and Alejandro Gracia on court three to start.  Tuki Jacobs and Oliver Gingras evened it up with a 6-2 win over Max Benaim and Constandinos Christoforou on the second court.  Juan Cruz Soria and Loic Cloes defeated Sam Rice and Leonardo Menezes 6-4 to give South Alabama the point.

All but one of the five single matches won by South Alabama came in straight sets.  Jacobs defeated Christoforou in the No. 2 court 6-1, 6-1 to start things off for the Jags.  Marzol beat Menezes 6-3, 6-0 on court No. 3, and Noyon clinched the victory on court No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Gracia.

"Clemont Marzol got the win, and he's been working pretty hard," said Brochu.  "He had two heartbreakers against Florida State and Troy two weeks ago.  Today he showed he's a very solid player."

Soria fell on court No. 1 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 to Rice.  Cloes rallied after dropping the first set to Forne and won on court No. 5 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.  Lucas Gonzalez closed things out for the Jags and defeated Benaim 7-5, 6-4.

"It's good to see guys like Pierre Noyon and Lucas Gonzalez getting two wins because in the previous tournament they had struggled," said Brochu.  "They weren't happy the way they were playing.  Today they showed they're back on track.  It was especially nice to see Pierre clinch the win for us.

South Alabama returns to action next Saturday and face Southern Mississippi at 1:30 p.m.
