MOBILE, Ala. – Torrence Sumerlin signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of South Alabama baseball program for the 2016-17 season, as announced Thursday by head coach Mark Calvi.
Sumerlin batted .364 with 16 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 74 RBI, 55 runs scored and three stolen bases in 56 games for Allen County (Kan.) Community College last season. He posted a .447 on-base percentage and .795 slugging percentage while hitting safely in 42 of 56 contests. His 22 home runs ranked tied for sixth in National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I. He earned first-team all-region VI honors as a utility player, as well as first-team all-conference selection by the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. Sumerlin was also named an NJCAA Academic All-American for the 2015-16 academic year.
As a freshman, he batted .319 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 37 RBI, 25 runs scored, and four stolen bases in 42 games at Morton (Ill.) College in 2015 while posting a .387 on-base percentage and .548 slugging percentage.
"Torrence had a really good year; his sophomore year was really good," USA assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Chris Prothro said. "He followed up a good freshman year at a different junior college in Illinois. He was fortunate enough to transfer to a school and play for a coach we all knew really well, and he had a good year. His numbers kind of tell you who he is; he has a lot of tools. We think his bat speed and power is what is going to play at our level. He has a really good right-handed stroke, and a big-time arm – he can really throw so it should play well at third base or behind the plate but we are mostly thinking of him as a third baseman. He has a lot of tools, is a great kid and an exceptional student."
