JAG BASEBALL SIGNS ARGUELLES TO NLI

MOBILE, Ala. – Left-handed pitcher Andres Arguelles signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of South Alabama baseball program for the 2016-17 season, as announced Thursday by head coach Mark Calvi.

Arguelles was named the 2016 Miami Herald All-Dade 9A-7A Pitcher of the Year, and was also a 9A-7A first-team all-Dade County selection after going 13-1 with 119 strikeouts against 33 walks and a 0.84 ERA while also recording five complete games, three shutouts and three no-hitters in 15 appearances for Christopher Columbus High School in Miami.

The 6-0, 175-pound southpaw tossed a no-hitter in the Region 4-9A semifinal, and followed that performance with a complete game in the region final – allowing just one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts and four walks – to lead CCHS to the Florida High School Athletic Association class 9A state championship round. He helped the Crusaders capture the 2015 8A state crown.

"His numbers are unbelievable, especially when you consider that he pitched in 9A – the largest classification in Florida – and did it in Miami which is arguably the best baseball area in the country," Calvi said. "Andres is a mid-to-upper 80s left-hander with four pitches. He throws all of his offspeed pitches for strikes, and is a great competitor. He is an absolutely fantastic kid. He wanted to be here, and it was an easy decision for us to recruit him.

"He played at one of the most storied high school baseball programs in Miami, and one of the better ones in the state of Florida in the last 30 or 40 years. He has played big-time high school baseball, and he is the certain type of kid who I don't think will be overwhelmed at the next level."
