MOBILE, Ala. – Former University of South Alabama baseball All-American Jordan Patterson was recently named to the Pacific Coast League (PCL) All-Star Team and will compete in the Triple-A All-Star Game Wed., July 13, at BB&T Ballpark in Charlotte, N.C., at 6:05 p.m. (CT). The game will be aired by the MLB Network.
Patterson, who is currently playing for the Albuquerque Isotopes, was named a California League Mid-Season All-Star last season with the Advanced-A Modesto Nuts. He was promoted to Double-A New Britain later in the 2015 season before starting this season with the Triple-A Isotopes of the Colorado Rockies organization.
"It is a big honor to even be mentioned in being an All-Star," Patterson said. "I am humbled and blessed to be able to be a part of it. This isn't my award at all; it goes to my teammates, coaches, family and everybody who has helped me. It is just a testament to those people, and I am just happy to be a part of it."
Through 66 games, Patterson is batting a team-leading .314 with 14 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 30 RBI and seven stolen bases with Albuquerque. He currently ranks fifth in the PCL in on-base percentage (.418).
"I have just stuck to who I am and cleaned up my approach a little bit," Patterson said of his first-half success. "Ultimately, I want to swing at good pitches and have good at-bats – just dictating what I am going to do with my at-bats and not letting the pitcher dictate what is going to go on. I swing at pitches I want to swing at, and not pitches the pitcher wants me to swing at. I am doing a better job of dictating which pitches I am swinging at, and the results have been better thankfully."
As much as Patterson is thriving in the physical part of the game, he said the opportunity to learn from the veterans on his team from a mental standpoint has been just as rewarding.
"A lot of our guys have been in the big leagues and have some experience and knowledge, and it's my job to pick their brains and learn as much as I can from these guys who have some (MLB) service time," he said. "It has been awesome to be with these guys; they have knowledge and they aren't doing anything other than trying to help you. It would be dumb of me not to ask questions and grow as a player."
