SAVANNAH, Ga. – University of South Alabama men's golfer Jason Mendel tied for fourth Saturday at the Oglethorpe Invitational after concluding his third straight round of par or below at the 34th annual edition of the event.
A rising junior from Norcross, Ga., Mendel carded an even-par 71 over the final 18 holes at the Wilmington Island Club to finish the tournament with a 4-under-par 209 total. He began play with a 2-under-par 69 on Thursday, matching that total the following day.
It's the second time this summer that Mendel has placed among the top five after participating in a playoff at the Yamaha Atlanta Open in June.
Henry Westmoreland IV posted a 14-under-par 199 three-day total — including a 9-under-par 62 on the final day — to end up one shot ahead of Travis Trace. Mendel and two others were two strokes in back of third-place finisher Spencer Schindler.
There were 109 individuals in the field when play started on Thursday morning, with the top 60 surviving the cut after 36 holes to advance to the final round.
