EIGHT CURRENT JAGS COMPETING IN SUMMER BASEBALL



MOBILE, Ala. – Eight current University of South Alabama baseball student-athletes are competing in six different summer leagues, including one in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.

Jared Barnes is batting .261 with three doubles, three RBI, four runs scored and one stolen base in eight games with the Brewster Whitecaps of the CCBL. Barnes hit safely in his first four games with the Whitecaps, and has hit safely in six of eight contests while posting a .400 on-base percentage. Barnes joins Cole Billingsley (Yarmouth-Dennis), J.T. Files (Brewster), Jordan Patterson (Bourne) and Robby Campbell (Yarmouth-Dennis) as Jaguars who have recently played in the CCBL during the Mark Calvi era at South Alabama.

Three Jaguars are competing in the Valley Baseball League (VBL). Brendan Donovan and Matt Sharp are both playing for the New Market Rebels. In five games played, Donovan is hitting .400 with two doubles, one home run, three RBI, five runs scored and one stolen base while posting a team-best 1.304 OPS, including a .571 on-base percentage. He has hit safely in his last four games, and recorded multiple hits in half of those contests. Sharp has made five relief appearances, and is 0-2 with one save and a 3.48 ERA in 10 1/3 innings pitched. He has struck out 10 batters against 12 walks, and is averaging two strikeouts per appearance.

Jaguar left-hander Joey Jones is 1-0 in four appearances, three of which were starts, for the Winchester Royals of the VBL. He has recorded 10 strikeouts against nine walks in 15 2/3 innings pitched, and earned his first win of the summer on June 11 when he tossed five innings and allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks against the Front Royal Cardinals. The southpaw tossed a season-high six innings and allowed only one hit in his last start, which came on June 18 against the Waynesboro Generals.

Dylan Hardy is playing for the Acadiana Cane Cutters of the Texas Collegiate League. In five games played, Hardy is batting .222 with one RBI, five runs scored and five stolen bases. He has hit safely in three of five games, including a season-high two hits against the Victoria Generals Tuesday night.

USA right-hander Avery Geyer is playing for the Hayesville Aviators of the Jayhawk Baseball League. In three relief appearances, Geyer is 0-2 with a 3.68 ERA, and has struck out 12 batters against two walks in 7 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out a season-high six batters and allowed one run on two hits in three innings against the Hays Larks on June 12. Geyer allowed one hit and recorded all three outs via strikeout in one inning of work in his last appearance on June 15.

Jaguar left-hander Zach McMullen has made four starts with the Leesburg Lightning of the Florida Collegiate Summer League (FCSL), and has not allowed an earned run in 11 2/3 innings pitched. McMullen has struck out 12 batters, which is tied for 13th in the FCSL, and issued four walks while averaging three strikeouts per outing. He struck out a season-high four batters in four innings while allowing only one hit on June 8 against the DeLand Suns.

Wells Davis is playing for the Clarinda A's of the MINK Collegiate Baseball League. Davis is batting .200 with three doubles, two home runs, 16 RBI, eight runs scored and two stolen bases in 15 games played. He recorded two hits and two RBI in the season opener, and has hit safely in 11 of 15 contests including four multiple-hit games. Davis tallied a season-high three hits on June 5 against the Omaha Strike Zone.
