UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/21

Date: 3/21
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Kevin Kutchera, Jr., WR, Livermore, Calif.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Kutchera: "Kevin has come out and had a great spring.  He has been solid, and he continues to get better every day.  He's a guy who we are expecting a lot of big things from this year.  He just comes out and does his job every day."

Defensive Player of the Day: Tavon Cox, Fr., LB, Kissimmee, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Cox: "Tavon had a great day today.  He is still learning the game, but he is getting better and better from one day to the next.  What I love is the energy that he carries on the field; when we go to a live period, he takes it to another level every time.  It's unbelievable."

Play of the Day: After a completion from Evan Orth to Deshawn Applewhite in the flat, Diantae Thomas was able to force a fumble that the defense recovered to prevent a third-down conversion.

Team period highlights: The first- and second-team offensive units ran 10 third-down plays in the final team period of the day, which followed a nearly 15-minute segment of practice that saw USA's offense take close to 25 snaps.

Miscellaneous Notes
-In the last team period of the morning, the offense was able to convert four of its 10 opportunities to move the chains.
-Wayne Johnson also forced a fumble for the Jag defense during the first team period of the day, with both Roman Buchanan and Cox credited with tackles for loss.
-Dami Ayoola finished the morning with a team-best three receptions during the team period, while Cameron Broadnax, Gerald Everett and Kutchera posted two catches each during 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills.
-Thomas intercepted a pass during the 7-on-7 period, and Cox and Jeremy Reaves were both credited with pass break-ups during the same segment of practice.
-Redshirt freshman QB Dallas Davis went 4-of-6 passing during team drills after connecting on 8-of-9 attempts during the skeleton passing session.
-Punt returns were the focus of both special teams periods of the day.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On how the team looked in its first practice after more than a week off: "It was a great practice, they came out with a great attitude; I think the week off helped them get their legs back.  They were excited and ready to go.  We have some things to polish up offensively — we didn't execute very well today, the defense got after the offense.  I thought they came out with the right attitude."
-On what he saw after reviewing the first spring scrimmage: "We see some guys progressing and we see some who are not.  We have to get everybody on this team progressing if we're going to be what we want to be.  It is the middle of the spring [season] so I'm not expecting everybody to quite be there, but we have to get everyone playing at a higher level."
-On Bull Barge: "Bull came in last year as a true freshman and played some.  He has made that next step to become a really good football player.  He loves the game, he studies it, he is always doing what he is supposed to be doing; that's why he is a good football player."

Up next: The Jaguars will next work out on campus Wednesday beginning at 7:10 a.m.
