Date: 3/2
Time: 7:10-9:10 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads
Offensive Player of the Day: James Bynes, Jr., TE, Miami, Fla.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Bynes: "James has come out and had two solid days, he has really practiced hard. He's made a lot of plays, he is giving great effort and he seems to be giving us a solid option at the tight end spot."
Defensive Players of the Day: Darrell Songy, So., LB, New Orleans, La. and Diantae Thomas, So., S, Dothan, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack on Songy and Thomas: "Both had takeaways and were flying around while learning the defense. At the same time they are giving unbelievable effort, and the result of great effort is you get takeaways. For two new guys to come in here and have the players rally around them is huge for us."
Play of the Day: Evan Orth hit Tony Ray Parnell down the right sideline, with the wide receiver catching the ball over his shoulder while getting one foot inbounds to complete the play.
Team period highlights: The offense ran just over 30 plays in a 15-minute period, with four quarterbacks taking an equal number of snaps. Songy and Thomas had interceptions on back-to-back snaps, and Kalen Jackson added a sack.
Miscellaneous Notes-The first hour of the day featured the offense and defense working on individual drills and concepts.
-The second half of practice began with 2x2 half-line drills followed by a 10-minute period of one-on-one match-ups.
-There was also a 10-minute period that focused on skeleton passing drills with all 11 players on the field for both sides.
-The punt coverage unit was the feature of both special teams periods.
-Thomas finished with a pair of interceptions including one during the one-on-one period, with T'Qwan Robinson and Ryan Robinson also picking off passes.
-Josh Magee and Dami Ayoola caught two passes each as Dallas Davis opened the skeleton passing period by going 4-of-4; Davis finished the day completing 6-of-10 attempts.
-During the one-on-one segment of practice Cole Garvin connected on a pair 35-yard touchdown passes while also finding Chris Lewis for a pick up of 25 yards.
Head coach Joey Jones-On the first two days of spring practice: "There was a lot of energy, guys are coming to practice with a mission; I like to see that. I would like to see that continue throughout the rest of the spring. When we put the pads on it's going to be a key for us to learn how to play the game physical, that's what we need to emphasize. I'm pleased so far."
-On the team's quarterbacks: "They've looked good, but it's hard to tell much right now after the first two days. But they are all working hard and doing the right things."
-On Jimmie Gipson III: "He's coming off that injury — he's probably 90-95 percent right now — and obviously he is going to be one of our best players next fall so we are trying to make sure he is healthy and ready to go. But we will work him in [this spring] slowly."
-On the practice plan for the opening week of the spring season: "We had a game plan for these first three days with what we want to accomplish, trying to install our offense and defense. After this weekend we are going to be able to evaluate kids based on what they do out on the field individually, that's the part of spring training you want to come out with — that each person gets a little bit better, which makes the team better when that happens."
Up next: Friday will see the Jags work out from 7:10-9:10 a.m. on campus in shells
