USA’S COLLINS, SCOTT SELECTED FOR NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP

INDIANAPOLIS – A pair of underclassmen from the University of South Alabama men's track and field program will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championship with the announcement Tuesday that Sean Collins and Rafael Scott have been selected to participate in the event.

Collins earned a bid in the pole vault while Scott will participate in the 60-meter dash, with the meet scheduled to take place in Birmingham March 11-12.  They will be the first Jaguars to compete at the national championship since Lindsay Schwartz finished 13th in the women's pentathlon at the 2012 meet, and they are the first men to qualify individually since DeRico Tilley made the field in the 200-meter dash in 2001; the men's distance medley relay finished ninth at the '06 NCAA Championship.

Collins set a school-record in the pole vault at the Jaguar Invitational on Feb. 7 after clearing 5.42m, and he would go on to win the event at the Sun Belt Conference Championship.  The freshman from Mobile was first or second in the discipline at all five meets he competed at this winter.

Scott, who hails from Lucedale, Miss., recorded a time of 6.65 seconds — a school record — in the preliminary rounds of the 60-meter dash at the SBC Championship, going on to win the finals after crossing the line in 6.67 seconds.  It was the second victory in the race this season for the sophomore after he also finished first at the Jaguar Invitational.
