No. 39 WOMEN’S TENNIS LOOKS TO KEEP STREAK ALIVE IN CALIFORNIA

MOBILE, Ala. – The No. 39 University of South Alabama women's tennis team hopes to extend their seven-match unbeaten run this weekend when they head to San Francisco for three matches.

Coming off a 7-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana at home, the Jaguars will take on No. 60 San Jose State Friday at 2 p.m., San Francisco Saturday at 3 p.m., and Santa Clara Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We try to play three matches in a row once a year, and to win our conference we have to be able to play three matches in a row, so it's a good test for our fitness and if we're mentally prepared to do so," said USA head coach Jaco Keyser.

The Jaguars jumped up 31 spots in the most current ITA rankings, and freshman Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.), owner of a seven-match win streak, debuted at No. 52.

Friday's match will be the first time South Alabama will have faced off against No. 60 San Jose State. Led by No. 122 Marie Klocker, the Spartans started their season with four straight wins, but have dropped their last two matches to No. 54 Arizona and No. 27 Arizona State. Last spring, San Jose State went 14-7 with victories over No. 68 Hawaii, No. 71 Pacific, and No. 72 San Diego State.

"Those California schools play a tough schedule, so they're always ready to go," Keyser said.

On Saturday, the Jaguars take on the Dons for the first time. San Francisco is looking to get their first win of the season after opening 0-7. The Dons went 13-10 last spring, while going 8-0 at home. San Francisco is led by the No. 117 player in the nation, Andrea Ka.

"It's a great challenge," said Keyser. "It's a good test for our fitness and if we're mentally prepared."

USA caps off the weekend by playing Santa Clara. The meeting will be the first time the teams will have faced off. The Broncos have started their season with a 3-4 record.

"Every match is a little different," Keyser said. "We're just trying to become match tough and get better on a day-to-day basis so we're ready for the postseason."
