BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Postseason action for the University of South Alabama men's and women's track and field squads will commence postseason action with the start of the 2016 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship on Monday.
The event will take place over two days at the Birmingham Crossplex, beginning with the men's heptathlon Monday at 9 a.m. (CST) and running through the 4x400-meter relay races set for a 4 p.m. start the following day.
"I think that we have progressed each week, I believe we have some people who are capable of doing very well," said Jaguar head coach Paul Brueske. Â "I just want to see the guys getting after it, going out there and competing to the best of their ability. Â If we do that I think it will be a good outcome."
Christoph Graf is the lone returning individual champion for the Jags from last winter's championship, having won the men's 3,000 meters; he was all-Sun Belt in the mile too after ending up second in the race, and also scored points for the team with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. Â Patrick Rohr earned all-conference honors as well in the 3,000-meter run after coming in as the runner-up after Graf, with the then-junior adding a fourth-place result in the 5,000 meters and finishing sixth in the mile run. Â Niel Giliomee and Ravaughn Pope also were all-SBC honorees last season, with the former coming in second in the pole vault and the latter finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles.
In addition, Renaldo Frechou, Rafael Scott and Mark Watts just missed collecting all-league recognition with the trio placing fourth in the weight throw, 60-meter dash and 400 meters, respectively.
The Jaguar men were fourth in the team standings a year ago.
Kaitlyn Beans is the lone returning all-Sun Belt performer for the women, having finished second in the triple jump at least year's championship. Â Ariel Johnson was seventh in the same event and Laura Labuschaigne placed sixth in the mile run as the squad was eighth in the team standings.
Jordan Friz enters the meet ranked at the top of the conference performance list in the women's pole vault, while Joanna McCoy stands third in the mile and fifth in the 3,000 meters. Â Taylor Dames is tied for the fourth in the league in the high jump, and Berta Lucas stands fifth in the 60-meter hurdles.
For the men, Sean Collins is first in the SBC in the pole vault — he, like Friz, set a school record in the event earlier this season — with Jan-Louw Kotze entering the championship fifth in the weight throw and Matthew Dillon ranked the same in the 60-meter hurdles.
