MOBILE, Ala. – After upsetting No. 13 LSU 4-3 this past weekend, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team returns home to host Southeastern Louisiana at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts on Saturday.
The Jaguars face the Lions at 1 p.m. and will enter the match with a 7-3 spring campaign. The Lions have an overall spring season record of 3-2, while coming off a 2-5 loss against Southern Miss.
The last time these two teams met, South Alabama claimed a 6-1 win over SELU in February 2009.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "Southeastern Louisiana is always at the top of their conference, and it will be another great challenge for the team."
The close victory over LSU extended South Alabama's win streak to six matches, and earned the Jags a spot in the ITA rankings at No. 70. Senior
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) clinched the match defeating
Abigail Owens 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 on the No. 6 court.
"Our confidence is riding high. It's important what we're going to do with confidence," Keyser said. "So far this week, we've been having some good practices, and hopefully we can just keep on building day after day."
Freshman
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) – voted Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week twice in a row – has a singles record of 6-1, with five of the wins in the No. 1 flight. Meszarosova remains undefeated in three matches in the No. 3 flight, contributing to her singles record of 7-2.
"We're trying to control what we can control, work on our fundamentals, and keep on getting better," Keyser commented.
Dany Raygadas leads the Lions with a 4-1 singles record in the Nos. 2 and 3 flights, while
Danlina Dahlmans has a 3-1 record, with the loss coming at the No. 1 flight. SELU has an overall doubles record of 9-4.
"It's always the same for us," Keyser said. "It's how we come out from an energy and focus standpoint, how well we execute our fundamentals, and the level we compete at."
