JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team went unbeaten in doubles and added three more victories in singles Saturday on day two of the UNF Classic at the UNF Tennis Courts.
USA faced Troy in singles and teams from Barry and Flagler in doubles.
Two of the Jaguars' singles wins came in straight sets. Sophomore
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) downed
Sanae Ohta 6-2, 7-5 and senior
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) defeated
Efriliya Herlina 6-1, 7-5.
Senior
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) bounced back from a first-set loss to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 over
Hannah Seizer, but sophomore
Alina Zolotareva dropped a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 decision to
Nancy Karaky.
"Overall it was a pretty good day," USA assistant coach
Shayann Vaezzadeh said. "In singles, we competed well and came away with some quality wins. It's a pity that Alina rolled her ankle while in control of her match, but besides that, we definitely took some steps forward today."
Both Jaguar doubles teams won their matches by an 8-6 score. Stiteler and Zolotareva prevailed over
Sonja Larsen and
Karina Goia of Barry, and Mitta and Matuskova defeated Flagler's
Mary Jo Nanti and
Felicitas Runkel.
"We can always execute better in doubles but we did a good job of finding a way to win both matches," Vaezzadeh said.
Tournament play concludes Sunday.
