MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama's women's tennis team will head to the University of North Florida to compete in the UNF Classic this weekend to close out the fall season.
The Jaguars will send seniors
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) and
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.), and sophomores
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) and
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) to the tournament.
"The good thing about this team is that we've got plenty of talent," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser. "We're excited to get out there and play in some match situations."
The UNF Classic marks the first for the Jags since the UNLV Invitational from Sept. 23-25, where Zolotareva came away with a third-place finish. She defeated Washington State's
Ege Tomey 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to secure third.
Zolotareva also claimed a flight title at the Thomasville Invitational this fall, where she won 7-6, 6-0 over her teammate, freshman
Malika Auger-Aliassime (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), in the finals.
"We've established an identity and culture that I want for this program and for this team," Keyser said. "We're sharper, we're in a lot better shape, and the team spirit is right where we want it right now. If we can keep those three things at a good level, we'll be a good team."
Other teams attending the UNF Classic include Troy, Flagler, and Barry.
"Each year's team has a different path," said Keyser. "We had to work on our fitness, fundamentals, and become more unified as a team. We've taken great steps regarding those three things."
