MOBILE, Ala. – With the start of the fall season approaching, University of South Alabama head baseball coach Mark Calvi is this week's guest on the athletic department's "Inside JagNation" weekly podcast.
Not only does Calvi — entering his seventh season at the school, and sixth as the Jaguars' head coach — talk about his goals for the next month, he discusses how the USA staff structures fall practices and scrimmages, how teams are determined for scrimmages and how important the fall season plays a role in his planning for the spring. Other topics Calvi touches on include comparing minor league and college baseball, the differences between being a coach and being a scout, his philosophy on recruiting and his hopes for the program in the long term.

Since taking over the reins of the program in 2012, Calvi has posted a 167-129 overall record, guided the Jaguars to three Sun Belt Conference titles and a pair of berths in an NCAA Regional. He has twice been chosen the Ron Maestri SBC Coach of the Year — picking up the award in 2013 and again two years later — while prior to his arrival at South Calvi helped South Carolina to the 2010 national championship; he was selected the Pitching Coach of the Year by Collegiate Baseball News following his last season on the Gamecock staff.
