JAG BASEBALL FALL UPDATE – 10/25

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team wrapped up its second week of fall practice with three intrasquad games last weekend.

USA has played eight intrasquads since it opened fall practice on Oct. 10, and will continue to play every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday through the end of fall drills which are scheduled to conclude on Sun., Nov. 20.

"I have been pretty pleased with the competition," USA head coach Mark Calvi said. "You have the ups and downs of the fall, like anyone else, and the doldrums of just playing your own team, but I have seen some good things out of some guys. We have some depth on the mound, and I know for a fact we have some speed on offense. We have some moving parts on offense and defense. I feel that our defense will be pretty solid again, which has been a staple for us. We need to play great defense. Offensively I have seen some guys come around; we have a few guys who have shown some good things. It has given us a chance to put them in a competitive situation three to four times a weeks, and it has been very productive to this point."

Sophomore catcher Carter Perkins leads the team in batting average (.391), while junior catcher Jared Barnes leads all hitters in doubles (5), total bases (14) and slugging percentage (.522). Barnes and Perkins share the team lead in hits with nine. Cam Cummings, Andrew Cash and Wells Davis share the team lead in RBI (6), and Cash has recorded the only home run through eight intrasquad games. Travis Swaggerty leads the team with three stolen bases.

Five Jaguar pitchers – Alex Adair, Thomas Huston, Randy Bell, Avery Geyer and Tyler Carr – have not allowed an earned run in multiple appearances this fall. Adair is tied with right-hander Jay Booth with the most appearances (4). Adair is also tied with Matt Peacock and Harrison Spruiell for the most strikeouts (7). Booth leads the squad with seven innings pitched. Adair boasts a 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio through six innings pitched, while Peacock has also recorded a 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in just five innings pitched.

"We have been injury-free for the most part," Calvi said. "Some guys who were dinged up coming in here seem to be responding nicely to treatment from our medical and strength staffs; we're happy about that. The fall, so far, has gone along pretty well. The fact that we moved the start of fall practice back has helped as well. We haven't seen guys try to do more than they are capable of early on, so I think it (pushing fall practice start back) has been beneficial in a couple of ways. Mentally, it allowed some of the new guys to settle in, and physically, it allowed them to be a little more prepared for the rigors of a six-week fall season. I have been pleased, and the feedback I have received from the returners has been good – they have really liked it. From a recruiting standpoint, it has freed us up a lot early on through the month of September and through early October when a lot of fall baseball is being played. It has allowed all of us (coaching staff) to be out a good bit, yet still be here with the team. From the recruiting dynamic, I have liked it. And from the physical and mental aspect of guys being more ready and prepared, I have liked it. It has been a really positive move for us this fall."

South Alabama will intrasquad four times this week, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. USA will intrasquad at 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by 11 a.m. first pitch on Saturday and Sunday at Stanky Field.
