FORMER JAG BASEBALL ALL-AMERICAN PIERRE SELECTED FOR LOUISIANA SPORTS HALL OF FAME

MOBILE, Ala. – Former University of South Alabama baseball All-American and Major Leaguer Juan Pierre will be inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, the organization recently announced.

Pierre, who helped lead the Florida Marlins to the 2003 World Series title, batted .295 with 255 doubles, 94 triples, 18 home runs, 517 RBI, 1,075 runs scored and 614 stolen bases in 14 MLB seasons with six different organizations. He ranks 18th in career stolen bases in MLB, and led the National League in stolen bases in 2001 (46) and 2003 (65) and led the American League in 2010 with 68. He is one of just four players in MLB history to record 100 or more stolen bases with three different teams. Pierre was MLB's active career leader in stolen bases when he retired in 2015.

Pierre finished with over 2,200 career hits, and led the NL in hits in 2004 (221) and 2006 (204) while recording 200-plus hits in four different seasons. He played in all 162 games for five consecutive seasons from 2003-07, and closed his career with a .304 career postseason batting average.

The Alexandria, La., native was the 1998 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, and earned All-America honors from three different organizations in his lone year as a Jaguar after leading the league in hits (95), runs scored (77) and stolen bases (54). He recorded 30 multiple-hit games and stole two or more bases in 17 contests prior to getting selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 13th round of the 1998 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Pierre was inducted into the USA Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.

Pierre will be enshrined into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame on June 24, 2017, in Natchitoches, La., along with David Toms (PGA), Ed Reed (NFL) and Calvin Borel (three-time Kentucky Derby winner), as well as several others influential sports figures from Louisiana.
