Date: 8/26
Time: 7:15-9:10 a.m.
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads
Offensive Player of the Day: Gerald Everett, Jr., TE, Lithonia, Ga.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Everett: "Gerald has just had a great fall camp. He continues to make plays day after day, his leadership is starting to grow and he has been locked in every day. Gerald is a big-time weapon out there."
Defensive Player of the Day: Bull Barge, Fr., ILB, Moultrie, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Barge: "Coming in as a freshman linebacker, there's a metaphor I like to use when I watch him — he's sticking the fire hose in his mouth trying to get as much water as he can. He's trying to gather as much information as possible. Bull understands the system now, he gets the concept of the run game and the pass game. He has continually gotten better throughout camp, and I think he is a guy we will be able to rely on on Saturdays."
Play of the Day: On third-and-nine, Everett beat his man down the field to catch a pass from Cody Clements in stride for a gain of more than 35 yards.
Team period highlights: The first- and second-team offensive units ran five plays each facing third-and-long at the end of practice. Clements helped the first team convert twice with a 15-yard pass to Kevin Kutchera followed by the completion to Everett, while the second team moved the chains three times with Dallas Davis connecting with Marvin Shinn, James Bynes and Nathan Sassaman.
Miscellaneous Notes-There was a team period earlier in the day — with the first- and second-team offenses running five-play series — playing out after starting in first-and-10 situations.
-Over 70 minutes of the nearly two-hour workout was devoted to individual drills.
-USA began the morning with a special teams period on punt coverage, then ended the practice going over kickoff returns.
-Davis was 4-of-5 passing overall during the third-down period while Clements completed 3-of-5 attempts, with Sassaman the only individual with more than one reception.
-On the second third-down play of the morning, Raymoné Wiggins broke up a pass by stripping the ball from the receiver's hands to prevent a conversion.
Head coach Joey Jones-On what the team worked on Wednesday: "We worked on third-and-long situations with the offense against the defense, and also we worked on running first-down plays. Both sides did well, they were very attentive this morning. We have a bunch of guys who are locked in right now."
-On how the coaches have set up the practice plan this week: "We ran a little heavier on the game plan for Gardner-Webb today, and we will hit that from this point forward. But we have worked on the game plan two out of the last three days."
-On plans for the non-contact scrimmage Thursday: "It is all about organization. We're going to get on the sidelines and show the guys where they are going to be, where to go when they are called for special teams, who they report to when they are hurt. We need to have 100 percent attention during that scrimmage because if you don't have good organization you're not going to win. We have to be organized on the sideline and have our substitutions in place. All the things we need to execute in the game are what we will practice on Thursday."
Up next: The Jags will wrap up the week with practice Thursday on campus beginning at 8:25 a.m., closing the session with a situational scrimmage
