Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads
Offensive Player of the Day: Cody Clements, Sr., QB, Whittier, Calif.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Clements: "He came out and commanded the offense well. He made a lot of good decisions, and his leadership is a major aspect at that position. Cody's accuracy is coming around and his deep balls are coming back since he's been throwing for about three weeks. I really like the progress he is making."
Defensive Player of the Day: Akeem Lewis, Sr., DE, Abbeville, La.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Lewis: "We know Akeem is physically gifted and he can play, but he is really excelling with his leadership skills in bringing these young guys along. Today he was almost mistake-free, and it was full speed and playing like an all-conference kid can play. I think he has that ability, and I was just pleasantly surprised and pleased with him."
Play of the Day: Jeremy Reaves stepped in front of a pass intended for Claude Garrett during the first team period to make a one-handed deflection and prevent the completion.
Team period highlights: For the first time this fall there were two team periods during practice, with the first lasting 15 minutes while the offense ran first-down plays and the second a five-minute segment featuring the offense against the defense facing third-and-short situations.
Miscellaneous Notes-Today is the first time the Jaguars will practice twice in a day, with the team set to return to the field from 4:30-6 p.m. with a session focused on special teams.
-During the initial team period of the morning, Reaves broke up a pair of passes, with E.J. May and Quinton Lane supplying one apiece.
-Brad Murry forced a fumble that was recovered by Malcolm Buggs during the second team period, with the USA defense also getting stops on third-and-two when Nigel Lawrence, Kalen Jackson and Devon Earl combined to bring down Evan Orth short of the first-down marker as well as after Sean Grayer tackled Carlos Robinson II behind the line of scrimmage.
-The Jag offense had a pair of long completions during the opening team period; Clements connected with Josh Magee for a pick up of 45 yards, while DeMarrion Buford-Hughes caught a 35-yard pass from Hunter Vaughn.
-The Jaguars ended the day with a specials teams period working on field goals, with Aleem Sunanon converting his first four attempts — from 29, 33, 37 and 43 yards out — while Gavin Patterson went 2-for-2 and Corliss Waitman concluded the session with a successful kick of 55 yards.
Head coach Joey Jones-On the opening practice of the week: "We will put them in a ton of situations this week; last week was a big fundamental week, and now we are progressing. That's how you learn, I told the guys today they have to be smart football players and know when it is third-and-short or third-and-long, when they're in the red zone and coming off the goal line. You have to know those situations in a game, that's why we practice them. I thought they were attentive today, though they can be better."
-On working out after a day off: "I thought [not practicing Sunday] helped them, they came out ready to go. We have another practice this afternoon, so we'll see how they feel tomorrow morning; that will be a little more difficult, we'll see how they handle that."
-On the second practice session of the day in the afternoon: "This afternoon will focus heavily on special teams, we cover every part of that and go over them with a fine-tooth comb. We'll have some individual time after that, but we won't have any more 'team' time in the afternoon, we'll resume that tomorrow morning."
Up next: Tuesday's practice is scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
