MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama baseball signee Myles Straw was selected in the 12th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Wednesday by the Houston Astros.
Straw, who completed his sophomore season at St. Johns Rivers State College in Palatka, Fla., this season, was the 349th overall selection in the draft and the fourth player taken in the 12th round. He was the Astros' 14th selection in the draft.
He earned first-team all-Florida Mid-Conference honors in each of his two seasons at St. Johns River State, and was named the Mid-Florida Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the 2015 National Junior College Athletic Association Gulf District Marucci Elite Hitter Award winner.Â
Straw batted .413 with five doubles, four triples, one home runs, 27 RBI, 59 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 54 games this season for the Vikings. He posted a .472 on-base percentage and .490 slugging percentage while tallying 85 hits.
As a freshman in 2014, Straw hit .324 with nine doubles, two triples, 24 RBI, 38 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 49 games with a .406 OBP and .427 slugging percentage. He also helped lead the Vikings to back-to-back Mid-Florida Conference championships.
Straw lettered four years at Braden River High School in Bradenton, Fla., where he earned 2013 all-county honorable mention from the
Bradenton Herald.
