UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/27

Date: 3/27
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Place: Campus practice fields
Practice attire: Shells (Helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Player of the Day: Cameron Blankenship, Jr., OL, Alexander City, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Blankenship: "After coming in from UAB, Cameron has had a tremendous first two weeks of spring practice.  He has really taken on a leadership role, and he's performing at a high level.  I just couldn't be more excited at how well he has looked and progressed this spring."

Defensive Player of the Day: Demarius Rancifer, Jr., ILB, Pensacola, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Rancifer: "I think Demarius is figuring out what the defense is all about now that he is in his second year, he has progressively gotten better every day.  I'm always talking about consistency in performance, and he has been consistently improving.  It's good to see that from him, because he's a very good athlete; it's good to see him have some success."

Play of the Day: Tony Ray Parnell made a diving catch on a ball from Hunter Vaughn on the next-to-last possession of the team's 15-minute, 7-on-7 skeleton passing period near the end of the workout.

Team period highlights: For the first time this spring, the Jaguars did not have a team period.

Miscellaneous Notes
-With the first of three spring scrimmages on the schedule for Saturday, the Jaguars returned to wearing shells at practice for the first time in a week.
-The first period of the session saw USA go over kickoff returns, with the Jags working on covering kickoffs during the last period of the afternoon.
-In the period prior to skeleton passing drills, the offense had running backs assist the offensive line in picking up blitzes by the defense.
-Vaughn completed 12-of-13 attempts during the 7-on-7 period, while Matt Floyd was 10-of-14 passing.
-Christian Pearsall led all offensive players with four receptions, while Cameron Broadnax and Deonta Moore added three apiece.
-Marcus Jackson was credited with the lone pass break up for the Jaguar defense in the period.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On Friday's workout: "We made a decision to back off the physicality of practice.  We had a good practice, though, with a lot of teaching and fundamental work.  But everyone is anticipating tomorrow and how these guys will look in the scrimmage."
-On the teams progress midway through the spring season: "We've gotten better; we've got miles to go, but we have gotten better.  We need to keep concentrating on the fundamentals and things that win, like blocking and tackling.  I told the kids that if we're not getting better when we have pads on, we won't have this opportunity again until August."
-On what he wants to see in the scrimmage on Saturday: "I'm not worried so much about execution on either side, what I do want to see is a lot of effort and good fundamental play.  We're going to look at each player and evaluate them to see how they did, and try to work on things we need to improve next week to make ourselves a better football team."

Up next: The team's first spring scrimmage, scheduled to start at 3 p.m. Saturday at the campus practice fields
