UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/25

Date: 3/25
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Place: Campus practice fields
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Chris May, Jr., OL, Tuscumbia, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on May: "Chris year is a three-year starter, and his effort from the beginning to the end of practice doesn't change.  His leadership is growing daily, and he is a very talented, athletic, physical offensive lineman.  We have been looking to him for leadership this spring, and he's been providing it."

Defensive Player of the Day: Roman Buchanan, So., S, Enterprise, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Buchanan: "Roman is going to be a two-year starter in the fall and it shows.  He's directing traffic, he's where is supposed to be when he's supposed to be there.  It's been great to see his performance this spring, he's my constant out there; Roman has been in the system for two years, so he understands it and his play shows it."

Play of the Day: E.J. May's interception of a pass deep down the left sideline during the first-team offense's initial possession of the lone team period of the afternoon.

Team period highlights: The offense ran almost 50 plays moving the ball with drives starting on its own 40-yard line, with the first-team unit receiving a third possession; the period lasted 20 minutes.

Miscellaneous Notes
-This was the last of three straight workouts in full pads, and the final practice in full gear prior to the first scrimmage of the spring season on Saturday.
-In lieu of a second team period earlier in the session, the offense ran 22 snaps of inside running plays against the defensive front seven while wide receivers and tight ends faced defensive backs in one-on-one battles.
-The Jaguars worked on kickoff returns to start the day and covering kickoffs to end practice.
-It marked the second time this spring that Pearson recognized Buchanan for his efforts, making him the first defensive player to repeat as the player of the day; junior-college transfer Dami Ayoola accomplished the feat first on the other side of the ball.
-The long gain of the workout came when Hunter Vaughn found Ronnie Reed for a completion of more than 50 yards during the second-team unit's second drive of the team period.
-Xavier Johnson carried for 10-plus yards twice in the team period, with the runs coming during different possessions.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On practice Wednesday: "I love our intensity and the fact that we are coming out to work and get better; that's what it's all about.  We only have a few more practices on the field to get better, and they understand that.  We have to do what we can to improve in these next six to seven practices."
-On the offense's tempo: "We're trying to play as fast as we can, and it has been working real well.  It's a little frustrating for our defense right now because they have to get lined up quickly.  But when that happens next fall they are going to be a lot more used to it, so I feel like it's helping our whole football team."
-On the team's running backs: "I think that from top to bottom it's probably the deepest we've been at running back.  We've got some talented guys back there.  We've got D.J. Vinson at wide receiver, and he actually played running back at UAB — we have him in reserve, but I don't know that we'll need him because we have so many guys who can run the football.  I don't know what the pecking order is right now, but I know we've got a bunch of guys back there — about four or five of them — who we can count on."

Up next: Practice 3-5 p.m. Friday at the campus practice fields
