After leading the Sun Belt Conference with a 2.04 earned-run average and 157 strikeouts, Jon Lieber is named the league’s Player of the Year. The right-hander was also selected third-team All-America and first-team all-region by the American Baseball Coaches Association that spring after compiling a 12-5 record after helping the Jaguars to a 44-16 final record, the SBC Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA South I Regional in Baton Rouge, La. Following the season, Lieber would be a second-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals and go on to play 14 years in the Major Leagues with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
