2013 Senior Bowl Watch List

MOBILE, Ala.  – As it enters just its fourth year of competition, the University of South Alabama football program has already placed one of its own in the Senior Bowl. And with the 2012 season only one week away, Jaguar football could potentially send multiple student-athletes to compete in one of college football’s most prestigious all-star games.

Jake Johnson and B.J. Scott were named to the Senior Bowl’s first-ever “Watch List” on Thursday, which highlights over 300 seniors and top NFL draft prospects from 114 different schools to keep an eye on during the season.

“Courtney Smith played in the game, and now we have two guys who are being considered this year,” USA head coach Joey Jones said. “It's exciting for them, and for our football program that we have guys who can play at an elite level; you are talking about guys they are considering for the NFL."

Johnson, a 6-foot-1, 240-pound inside linebacker, led South Alabama in tackles (83) last season and finished second on the team with 6 1/2 tackles for loss. He was a second-team preseason all-Sun Belt Conference selection by Phil Steele Publications. Johnson had three games in 2011 with double-figure tackle totals, and led the team in tackles in five of the Jags’ 10 games. He lettered one year at Virginia Tech prior to transferring to South Alabama for the 2010 season.

Scott, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound safety, enters his second season at South Alabama this year. Last fall, the Prichard, Ala., native started the first seven contests before suffering a season-ending injury, but still finished fifth on the team with 48 tackles while recording a team-best four passes defensed. Scott also set a school game record with 180 kick return yards at Georgia State a year ago. Scott played at Alabama prior to transferring to South Alabama for the 2011 season.

The 2013 Senior Bowl, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 26, at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. The top 100 seniors in the country will be invited to participate in the 2013 Senior Bowl, although appearing on the watch list is not a requirement for a student-athlete to earn an invitation to the game.
