MOBILE, Ala. – May 3, 2013, will mark the 50th Anniversary of the University of South Alabama. Throughout the academic year, the USA Department of Athletics will recognize “50 Great Moments In Jaguar Athletics” to honor past teams, coaches and student-athletes for their accomplishments.

Courtney Smith scores the first points in school history on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Myles Gibbon with nine seconds remaining in the opening quarter against Hargrave (Va.) Military Academy, helping USA to a 30-13 victory in the program’s debut in front of 26,783 fans at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Smith would finish with five catches for 104 yards, while Brandon Ross rushed for 139 yards and two scores on 19 carries, to pace an offense that recorded 429 total yards. The Jag defense forced four turnovers and gave up only 106 yards on the ground, led by Justin Dunn’s eight tackles — which included 3½ for loss — and seven stops from Charlie Higgenbotham.
