  •  South Alabama pulled down its most rebounds (53) against a Division I opponent since November 2013 in a matchup against Detroit Mercy.

  •  The Jags won the rebounding battle 53–39 and outscored UTSA 19–11 off the bench.

Scouting the Aggies

  • The Aggies are off to their best start in nearly 15 years.

  •   NM State climbed into the College Insider Mid-Major Top 25 for the first time this season, debuting at No. 23 after last week's 76–68 victory over New Mexico.

  •  Through the early stretch of the season, Julius Mims has been the anchor of the Aggie frontcourt, continuing to impact winning on both ends of the floor. Mims enters the matchup averaging 16.0 points and a team-best 8.6 rebounds per contest.

  •  Like South Alabama, New Mexico State is a relentless defensive team, ranking top 15 nationally in scoring defense (62.2 ppg; 13th), field goal percentage defense (36.0%; 8th), and three-point percentage defense (24.0%; 5th).

Notes You Need to Know

  • South Alabama made its first appearance in the Mid-Major Top 25 on Monday, checking in at No. 21 nationally across all mid-major programs.

  • South Alabama delivered its most complete performance on both ends of the floor on Sunday against UTSA. The Jaguars forced the Roadrunners into a season-high 56 three-point attempts — the most by any team against a Division I opponent this year — while holding UTSA to just 26.6 percent shooting from the field, the lowest mark allowed by South Alabama in nearly two years. The Jags also dominated the interior with a 40–12 advantage in points in the paint, forced 16 turnovers, and pulled down 53 rebounds — their most in nearly 12 years.

  • South Alabama has been one of the most efficient teams in the nation on both ends of the floor, creating high-percentage looks while turning defensive stops into scoring opportunities. The Jaguars rank second nationally in fouls per game (12.2) and fourth in turnovers per game (8.5). Additionally, they lead the Sun Belt in both turnover margin (+4.13) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.45; 65 assists to 48 turnovers).

  • The Jaguars' defensive identity has revolved around shutting down the paint and forcing opponents to rely heavily on the three-point line. South Alabama currently ranks first in the nation in three-pointers attempted against, forcing opponents to average 39.3 attempts per game — eight more triples than any other team in the country.

  • USA has controlled the interior in every game this season, including the exhibition, outscoring opponents 400–208 in the paint. The Jaguars also rank top three in the Sun Belt in both rebounding margin (+4.5) and fewest opponent rebounds allowed (35.1).

  • Harris has been a steady force for the Jaguars, scoring in double figures in seven of eight games while averaging 17.5 points and 5.1 assists per game over his last six contests. He delivered another all-around performance at UTSA, finishing just shy of a triple-double with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, eight rebounds, nine assists, and four steals to power South Alabama to an 82–58 road victory. He currently ranks top 10 in the conference in assists (2nd), assist-to-turnover ratio (8th), and scoring (5th).

  • South Alabama continues to rely heavily on its starting unit, with 81 percent of its total scoring coming from the opening five: Jayden Cooper, Chaze Harris, Adam Olsen, Peyton Law, and Randy Brady. All five rank as the team's top scorers: Olsen (16.0 PPG), Harris (15.5 PPG), Law (13.0 PPG), Cooper (9.5 PPG), and Brady (6.5 PPG). The starting five has accounted for 495 of the Jaguars' 614 total points this season. The bench has contributed 111 points overall — 46 of which came in the win over Spring Hill.
