MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama football head coach Steve Campbell, offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield, defensive coordinator Greg Stewart, along with offensive lineman Brian Ankerson and linebacker Riley Cole met with the media Monday to recap the game at No. 25 Louisiana and preview Saturday's game against Georgia State.
Head coach Steve Campbell
- On the Louisiana game:
"We didn't get off to the start that we wanted. We got a first down on our opening drive, but we couldn't generate anything offensively. They [Louisiana] were able to punch it in on their first drive and then it was 14-0 pretty quick after that. We weren't able to get a whole lot going offensively. At one point, we were able to make it 21-10, but we didn't play the way we had practiced during the week. I thought we had practiced well during the week and that we were in good position to go there and win the game. For one reason or another, we didn't have them ready to play the way we needed to play. We left some plays out there that possibly could have made it more interesting and give ourselves a chance to compete.
"This was the third-straight road game. We didn't beat Georgia Southern or Coastal Carolina, but we played hard and had done some good things. Both of those are good football teams. With this game having all the marbles on the table, I think we were primed to go and play a good game, but for one reason or another we didn't, and that's my job to get us to do that. We did not play the way that we are capable of playing and we let the game get away from us early. I thought the effort was good and the guys played hard. We just didn't play or coach well. You have to take your hat off to UL. They're a very good football team and deservedly so, but we're a better team than what we played Saturday.
- On the focus over these final three games:
"A lot of times, you just focus on just winning and there are times where you don't get that result when that's your only focus. Right now we have to focus getting better and the wins will come. If we play better, we'll have a great opportunity to win the game. We have to focus on the process. Our goal is always to win the game, but how do you do that? You do that by playing well and we need to get back to getting better every day, being unselfish and do the little things right. We didn't well at any of those three this past week and that is why we had those results. If we do those three things, we'll wins some games and put ourselves in position to reach some of the goals we set for the year." Â
- On Saturday's opponent Georgia State:
"I see a very athletic, well-coached football team in Georgia State. Offensively, they really run it well as they're averaging over 200 yards a game on the ground. They have a very athletic quarterback who can pull it down and run it. They have a very good running back. The offensive line does a good job coming off the ball, and they don't give up a lot of sacks.
"Defensively, they've given up some passing yards, but against the rush, they're one of the better teams in the conference. This past week against App Sate, they held them in check for three-and-a-half quarters, and really did a good job against them. They've got a lot of ability and are very athletic along their defensive line. They won't be the biggest that we've played against as they don't have a lot of 300-pound linemen, but they are very quick and athletic at the position. They are a team that is very capable of playing with the top teams in this league."
Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield
- On the Louisiana game:
"There were a couple of encouraging things after watching the tape that we just have to fix. It is 28-10 and we're marching right before half. Cade Sutherland is running right down the seam, and we don't do a real good job on this one pickup and Desmond (Trotter) ends up getting a fumble; we could have easily had a big play there to put us in a position to maybe score right before the half. What I thought was good was our kids came out after halftime and put together a 14-play drive, got down there and just missed the opportunity to get the first down. I think if we could have scored on those two possessions in that middle part, we could have gotten back into the game. Of course we didn't and we have to learn from that, but I think our kids saw those opportunities and maybe that will give them some confidence to get it done. We just have to play and coach a little bit better, and make some better plays at certain times."
On Georgia State:
"They are really quick up front; they're not overpowering size-wise, but are really quick and have some guys who have played a lot of football. The whole front seven is pretty solid. One thing that is different is they do not play as deep at times as the other teams have played, but they do play back. They're not going to play everybody pressed every time. They are a little more standard in their coverages, and I think there are some things we can take advantage of if we'll do that."
On the next three games:
"We knew that our last three games were going to be our toughest stretch. Those are three really good football teams. I think now what you have to focus on is continuing to get better and finding what we can build on. For us, it is we have to score points. We have gotten down to the red zone; we were doing really well in the red zone and the last couple of weeks we have not. So we're going to work hard on finishing those drives and making sure our guys are playing fast. What I mean by playing fast is we don't have them thinking, and they're able to come off the ball, play really fast and use their talents. We have to still protect the ball a little better, but we're going to get back to work. I think the guys are excited about the opportunity."
Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart
- On the Louisiana game:
"Early we had a third-and-six, and we made a call for a pass and they ran a zone. [The call] didn't give them a shot for us to make a play and that hurt. We had a third-and-10 on the third series where they made a play. Usually, we will have something that will give us a spark; those plays where we had the opportunity to give a spark, we didn't make those plays. Then they started doing some tempo, playing fast to where I needed to get the call in faster. It just kept getting worse the longer it got. One of the first few drives, if you hold them to a field goal to me it's the difference, but we didn't so that's one of the things we will try to get corrected this week."
- On Georgia State:
"They have a really good back in Tucker Gregg, he's explosive. Cornelious Brown [Quarterback] is young but very talented and athletic. Sam Pinckney is a good receiver. O-line is good; they will do some option stuff. All around good team that is very well-coached and they take advantage of what you give them. It will be a good challenge for us, but a challenge that we are looking forward to. I know our guys, we will come out fighting, we'll have a good Tuesday practice and Wednesday practice then get after them on Saturday."
- On Georgia State play-makers:
"[Brown] can run but would rather throw, but will pull it down and make some plays with his legs. He's really good on his short passing game. Another good player is Roger Carter their tight end. He may be a guy that they build their offense around, because they will put him everywhere. They will put him inside in the A gap, and in the number two as the slot receiver, and I believe that's who they will go to. But Brown is a good player; a young player but you can tell he can be a great player. He has done some things that will really impress you."
- On getting a good early start:
"This day and time you say you want to stop people but you can't. You've got to find a way to hold teams to field goals, because people are going to get in the red zone. Against Coastal, those first two drives they score, but after that when they get in the red zone you have to find a way to hold them to field goals. It was the same thing against UL, and against everybody, you play. It's not a magic defense; it's just doing what you are supposed to do and playing what you are supposed to play."
Offensive lineman Brian Ankerson
- On last weekend's game:
"We were focused on the first level, but we did not defend as we needed to, and that was our biggest problem. Â
- On coming back home:
"It feels great to be back home after being on the road for a few weeks. Being home really helps us as a team. We're looking at everything week by week, and we know we have enough games to get our winning season."
- On Georgia State's defense of line:
"They have a good defense of line, which means we have to focus on our steps and hand placement because they like to move around a lot."
- On finishing the season strong:
"Our goal this season is to have a winning season and make it to a bowl game. That is still on our mind and is still our main focus, but like Coach Campbell said, right now, we are focusing on improving each day."
Linebacker Riley Cole
- On last weekend's game:
"We gave away some key moments on third downs, and those are things we can't afford to give up. We lost focus early, and we struggled to gain it back."
- On coming back home:
"I am happy to be home so that we can get our mindset right to finish out the season strong. We have things we need to work on, and we are ready to get to work."
- On Georgia State:
"They have a good quarterback, and their running backs are fast, so we have to play a hard defense. We have to make sure we focus and complete the game strong from start to finish."
- On moving forward:
"Right now, we are playing for all or nothing. We all have to focus, do our jobs and play our roles. We have to practice harder and follow through with the plan to achieve our goal."
