University of South Alabama head men’s basketball coach John
Pelphrey announced the hiring of C. David Farrar as assistant coach
on Friday.
“I am
very excited about David Farrar joining our basketball family and
coaching staff,” Pelphrey said. “Coach Farrar is a very
talented basketball coach who has been very successful at a lot
of different levels. He will be a valuable asset to our program.”
Farrar, who
is no stranger to the Sun Belt Conference and Division I basketball,
served a combined seven seasons in the Sun Belt Conference. Farrar
was an assistant coach under Clem Haskins for two seasons at Western
Kentucky from 1984-86. The Hilltoppers recorded a 23-8 record in
1985-86 and a second round NCAA finish. It was the first tournament
appearance for the Hilltoppers since the 1980-81 season.
Farrar also
was head coach at Middle Tennessee from 1991-96. For his career,
Farrar has 349 coaching victories in 17 years of head coaching and
110 in Division I in eight seasons.
Prior to WKU,
Farrar was at Mississippi State as an assistant coach for five seasons
from 1979-1984, under Jim Hattfield (1979-81) and Bob Boyd (1981-84).
It was a highly
successful junior college career that launched Farrar into the Division
I ranks. He built a 137-33 record in five year at Hutchinson (Kan.)
Junior College. Included in that run is the 1988 National Junior
College Championship team, which compiled a 37-2 record and brought
Farrar national and regional recognition as coach of the year. He
was chosen as NJCAA and Kodak National Coach of the Year in 1988
and was the Region VI NJCAA Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1988.
Most recently,
Farrar was the head coach at the University of Idaho from 1997-2001.
He was elevated from associate head coach in 1996, to head coach
to begin the 1997-98 season.
Farrar is the
President and CEO of Farrar & Associates, a consulting firm
for athletics in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
His coaching
career began at Lindsay Wilson College in Columbia, Ky., where he
had 102 victories and the 1977 Kentucky Junior College Athletic
Association Championship. He also was the Athletic Director.
Farrar is a native of Indianapolis, Ind., and earned his bachelor’s
degree in education from Anderson College in 1969. He earned his
master’s degree in education from Ball State University in
1972.
Farrar joins
current assistant coaches Tom Ostrom, Isaac Brown and Matt Figger
on Pelphrey’s staff. Pelphrey begins his fourth year at the
helm of the Jaguar program.
“It is
exciting to be an active part of something as special as Coach Pelphrey’s
USA team,” Farrar said. “It is a great opportunity to
be a part of the growth and enthusiasm of this group.”
