Powell served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during a 20-year stint on the USA coaching staff, helping the Jaguars to a 794-431-1 (64.8%) record and 17 NCAA Regional appearances. During his tenure, the Jags won nine Sun Belt Conference regular-season, four division and seven tournament titles; five times Powell was part of a staff that led the Jaguars to within one win of a regional championship and a berth in the College World Series.  He guided the Jag pitching staff to sub-4.00 earned run average on four occasions, highlighted a 2.80 ERA in 1990 that ranked third in the nation.  Six USA pitchers would earn All-America recognition and 13 were selected first-team all-league under Powell’s direction, while 35 Jaguar pitchers signed contracts with professional organizations with six going on to reach the Major Leagues.
