Primarily the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator during his 16 years on the South Alabama staff, Crawford also served as the Jaguars head coach during the 1980 season and in his time with the program helped South post an overall mark of 541-215-2 (71.5%) while making six NCAA Regional appearances, winning three Sun Belt Conference titles as well as a pair of conference tournament championships. While he was on staff, the program had its first three All-Americans, 12 individuals named to the all-region team, 15 individuals who were chosen all-South Independent and 14 players who were named all-Sun Belt on 19 occasions. Crawford helped coach four individuals who were chosen in the first round of Major League Baseball’s June and January Secondary Drafts, while a total of 43 members of the program who played under his direction would go on to be chosen in the MLB Draft including the first four Jags ever to reach the Majors. His efforts aided USA in reaching the first No. 1 ranking in the national polls in school history in 1972 — a feat that was accomplished again during the 1975 season — while in his lone season as head coach he guided the Jaguars to a 33-11 record, the Sun Belt championship and an appearance in the NCAA East Regional.
