A native of Cairo, Egypt, El Mehelmy established himself as the University of South Alabama’s top tennis player of all-time during his four-year career. Competing at No. 1 singles position, he won four consecutive Sun Belt titles, 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1983 and was runner up in doubles play in 1981 and 1982… He led South Alabama to three straight Sun Belt crowns and was named Conference Player of the Year as a Freshman, a junior, and a senior. He was the Jags first ever nationally ranked player and was ranked as high as No. 16 in 1982… He led the Jaguars to two National Invitational Tournament appearances in 1982 and 1983, helping USA to the 1983 title… He received an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships in 1982 and 1983 and placed 17th in 1983… El Mehelmy compiled 92-27 singles record, including at 59-8 mark during his junior and senior season.
