ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Teams
GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of South Alabama baseball's Jared Barnes and Travis Swaggerty were each named 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings South Central All-Region, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Swaggerty was named first-team all-region as one of three outfielders, while Barnes was selected second-team all-region. The teams are voted on by members of the ABCA and led by the ABCA NCAA Division I All-America Committee. First-team selections are nominated for All-America honors, and will be announced on Sat., June 17.
Swaggerty ranked 12th nationally in on-base percentage (.484), and was named first-team all-Sun Belt Conference as well as to the SBC All-Tournament Team. He led the league in OBP, RBI (60) and runs scored (55), ranked second in batting average (.363) and total bases (125) and fourth in stolen bases (19).
Barnes, a first-team all-SBC selection, was selected in the eighth round (239th overall) of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday by the Miami Marlins. He led the SBC in slugging percentage (.768) and on-base percentage (.504) during league games, tied for the league lead in home runs (10), ranked second in total bases (73) and third in batting average (.368) and RBI (32).
He was named the National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association on May 16, after earning National Player-of-the-Week honors from Collegiate Baseball and SBC Player of the Week on May 15.
Barnes finished the season ranked second in the SBC in slugging percentage (.605), fourth in home runs (13), tied for fourth in sacrifice flies (5), sixth in RBI (50), 13th in batting average (.320) and 15th in OBP (.416).
