HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of South Alabama men's and women's track and field teams will compete in their final meet of the outdoor regular season this weekend at the Southern Miss Open on Friday and Saturday.
"This is our last meet before the Sun Belt Championships," head track and field coach Paul Brueske said. "We are looking for some great efforts and hopefully some personal-best performances. The weather may not be the best so we want to see the student-athletes adapt and overcome any conditions they may face."
South Alabama will travel a full squad to Hattiesburg, Miss., for the Open this weekend. The meet will begin on Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the men's and women's triple jump, followed by the men's and women's hammer and javelin. The pole vault events will be held Friday that evening off-site in Mobile, Ala., at the University of South Alabama's Jaguar Track at 6 p.m.
Saturday will begin with the field events at 11:30 a.m. with the women's high jump, the men's shot put and the women's discus. Running events will begin less than an hour later with the women's 3,000-meter run at 12:10 p.m.
Last week, two Jaguar student-athletes earned victories at the War Eagle Invitational in the men's and women's 1500-meter run. Migael Strydom's personal-best 3:53.01 ranked the freshman in the top-10 in the Sun Belt Conference for the event. Senior Joanna McCoy earned first place in her own event, crossing the line at 4:43.04 for a top-20 ranking in the league at 16th.
Two individuals - Zach Blahnik and Kaitlyn Beans - will travel to De Moines, Iowa, to represent South Alabama at the Drake Relays and will compete on Saturday morning.
Blahnik currently ranks in the top 10 in the league in both the men's discus throw (sixth) and men's hammer (second) while Beans leads the league in the women's triple jump and ranks ninth in the long jump.
