NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama women's basketball senior center Chyna Ellis was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week (Dec. 5), as announced by the league office on Tuesday. This is Ellis' first Player of the Week honor and is the first Jag to earn the award since Marquita Daniels on Feb. 1, 2016.
Ellis helped the Jaguars to a 2-1 week after averaging 16.3 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists per game while recording her fifth and sixth double-digit scoring games of the season. The senior center shot 18-of-41, 43.9 percent, from the field and 12-of-14 from the charity stripe. Against Southern Miss, she had her third double-double of the season and had a career-high 24 points to help lead South Alabama to its first win over Southern Miss since 2012 and had 17 points and eight boards in a loss that went down to the wire against Jacksonville. With the help of Ellis, the Jags 5-2 start is the best the Jags have had under head coach Terry Fowler.
The Jaguars are back in action on Saturday with a road contest at Ole Miss. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Oxford, Miss.
