MOBILE, Ala. – A group of 31 University of South Alabama current and former student-athletes received undergraduate degrees as part of the school's annual fall graduation ceremony, held at the Mitchell Center on Saturday.
Members of the group were a part of Jaguar squads that have claimed Sun Belt Conference championships or made national postseason appearances in the last two years in baseball, football, soccer and women's track and field. The class also features a dozen all-league performers.
Eleven members of the Jag football team that will be playing in the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl at the end of the month received their degree, including all-conference selections Roman Buchanan, Gerald Everett, Kalen Jackson, Josh Magee and Brandon McKee. Other members of the program earning their degree with the conclusion of the fall semester were Dami Ayoola, James Bynes, Wayne Johnson, Luke Lanier, Harrison Louden and Milton Revell.
And Shavarez Smith — who was voted second-team all-SBC in 2013 and '14 — graduated as well.
A total of seven individuals who helped South claim the women's outdoor track and field title in the spring took part in the ceremony, with the group featuring Ireland Armstrong, Phoebe Dowson, Megan James, Sara Jernfalt, Ariel Johnson, Berta Lucas and Tasha Russell; Dowson and Lucas received all-league recognition during their careers. Men's cross country runner Katleho Dyoyi — a two-time all-Sun Belt performer for the team — was joined by men's track and field student-athletes Charles Collins and Mark Watts, who also received all-SBC recognition in his time with the program.
After helping the Jag soccer team to multiple conference regular-season and tournament championships and NCAA Tournament appearances — highlighted by USA's first-ever NCAA Tournament victory in November 2015 — Sarah Hay and Nini Rabsatt-Smith earned degrees this fall. The latter was the league's Defensive Player of the Year in 2014 and a two-time all-Sun Belt selection.
Justin Flores and Joey Jones were members of the South baseball team, which was the 2016 SBC regular season co-champion en route to an NCAA Tournament berth, while volleyball's Mechell Daniel picked up all-league honors all four years of her career. Georgi Boyanov and Colby Davis, members of the men's and women's basketball programs, graduated along with Ally Purdy and Matt Sheehan from men's golf.
