Date: 4/8
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (Helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Claude Garrett, Jr., WR, Calumet City, Ill.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Garrett: "Claude has a tremendous work ethic, but he can blow the top off it — he has great speed as well. He's worked hard to sharpen his routes, we're expecting big things from him this fall. Claude brings it every day, and he really had a good day today when we needed him."
Defensive Player of the Day: Nigel Green, Jr., CB, Flowood, Miss.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Green: "The spring season has been a little long for Nigel, but I thought he turned the corner today. All his individual work showed, and he was more aggressive and confident. Today, Nigel showed me he can give me more depth at corner. I was really impressed."
Play of the Day: On the last snap of the practice, Garrett beat his defender with a spin move and broke free to grab a 50-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Vaughn.
Team period highlights: There was no team period during the two-hour session.
Miscellaneous Notes-Instead of a team period, the Jaguars went through 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills on two different occasions during the workout.
-Those periods — which were nearly 30 minutes in duration combined — saw the offense run approximately 75 plays.
-Both special teams periods were focused on punt formations and coverage.
-Captains were announced for the two teams in the Red-Blue Game scheduled for Saturday at noon; Braedon Bowman and Terrance Timmons will represent the offense, while the defensive selections were Blake Dees and Jimmie Gipson III.
-The draft to choose the two squads will be conducted on Thursday afternoon.
Head coach Joey Jones-On practice Wednesday: "We were in shells — there was no tackling — so we worked on the perimeter game with 7-on-7 and pass rush drills. I think they were a little tired because it was warmer today compared to the last few days, but we pushed them on offense and got a lot of reps."
-On what he's learned about the team in the spring: "I've seen the most improvement on defense. We weren't very good defensively early in the spring, but I think we've gotten better. We've started to shore up some holes on the front, some guys have stepped up over there — Demarius Rancifer is one example, and we knew Jimmie Gipson III was going to be a good player but he brought his game to another level this spring."
-On the main goal for the offense during the spring season: "Offensively we wanted to improve our tempo, and I think we're much better there. There's no doubt we can get even better in that area, but I thought our improvement from day one to now has started to become second nature to them. The more we do that, the better off we're going to be."
-On special teams improvement: "The biggest improvement on our team from last year is our kicking game. We probably haven't worked our game as much this spring, but our kickers have been performing very, very well."
-On the Red-Blue Game: "We'll have the captains pick the teams tomorrow, I know we'll have fun with it; the guys will talk a lot of smack to each other. But we're going to limit what we do — basically, we're going to run one defense with one coverage and about seven offensive plays. We're not going to show a lot, but we are going to let them get out there, compete and have fun."
Up next: The Jaguars will have one final workout at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility on Friday starting at 3 p.m.
