UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/23

Date: 3/23
Time: 3-5 p.m.
Place: Campus practice fields
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Player of the Day: D.J. Vinson, Jr., WR, Pinson, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent on Vinson: "I thought D.J. had a really good day at our 'A' receiver position.  He's starting to get comfortable playing receiver again — he was a running back last year, but now we have him in the slot.  I thought he did a really good job adjusting some of his routes against the coverage, then catching the football and making something happen."

Defensive Player of the Day: Antonio Carter, Jr., CB, Columbus, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson on Carter: "I've been very pleased with Anthony, because he has matched Blake Dees' energy and answered the challenge I give my guys every day; he and Blake come out here and run every play like it's their last one.  Anthony has been attuned to what I want, he's playing very fast and is having a really good spring so far."

Play of the Day: On the opening snap of the final team period, Hunter Vaughn hit Vinson in stride for a gain of more than 20 yards.

Team period highlights: The first team period, lasting just under 10 minutes and covering nearly 30 plays, saw the offense working against blitzes from its own 40-yard line.  The second 20-minute team segment of practice had all three offensive units beginning from the same spot and moving the ball while running almost 50 more plays.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Vinson added a gain of nearly 30 yards down the right sideline later in the final team period to finish with multiple receptions.
-Both Xavier Johnson and Tyreis Thomas cut back up the middle for significant runs on the last possession for the first- and second-team units, respectively.
-Dallas Davis and Daylan Abrams connected twice for pick ups of 20 or more yards to lead the third-team offense.
-Dees began the offense's second drive of the last team period with a tackle for loss, and Malcolm Buggs broke up a pass during the same possession.
-The opening special teams period of the day saw the Jaguars work on returning kickoffs, with the last to end the practice focused on covering kickoffs.

Head coach Joey Jones
-On the first practice session of the week: "We had very good intensity, it was a physical practice so we got in good work — I was proud of their attitude.  We're starting to get a little sharper out there on both sides of the ball, especially with the defense starting to come together.  We just have to keep working with that mentality."
-On the goals for the second week of the spring season: "We discussed our full personnel for the first time, looking at guys from top to bottom.  We're still going to give everyone chances, but we have to start formulating a depth chart; we have to find the guys who are going to be playing and start working them to make sure they get reps in practice to get ready for next season.  Every rep is valuable."
-On the team's conditioning this spring: "I think they are in pretty good shape.  We're rotating guys in a lot, they're not staying in a ton, but I haven't noticed any guys not in shape.  Usually at this time of year they're not in as good cardiovascular shape because they've been lifting weights — it normally takes the summer to get ready — but as long as we continue with this pace we will practice ourselves into shape."

Up next: Practice 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at the campus practice fields
